When you begin your search for a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, one of the first questions you will probably hear is: What type of puppy are you looking for? Pet/Companion quality ? or Show Quality? While I can't answer for other breeders as far as their definition of these two types of puppies, I can tell you our definitions, and what it means to you. A pet/companion quality puppy is one that has cosmetic faults that in no way effects the puppy's health, or personality. These puppies are just as healthy, and hardy as their littermates. A cosmetic flaw is something that would make us as the breeders feel that this puppy would not be suitable to compete in the breed ring to win points toward it's AKC Championship. These faults are usually markings that aren't correct such as, missing white markings, on face, feet, etc. or too much white in any area, or areas. It could also include a puppy with a blue eye, or a puppy whose bite (Teeth alignment) is not correct, a kink in the tail, or any other fault which makes the puppy a poor choice to be shown in the conformation ring. ![]() These puppies can however compete in obedience, agility, tracking, herding, carting, etc. A Show Quality Puppy is one that embodies the qualities necessary to compete in an AKC Conformation show, correct markings, eye color, bite, structure and movement. I hope this has helped you understand the difference between Pet and Show Quality puppies. |
