What Is A Pet Quality Puppy ?

When you begin your search for a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy, one of the first questions you will probably hear is: What type of puppy are you looking for?
Pet/Companion quality ? or Show Quality?
While I can't answer for other breeders as far as their definition of these two types of puppies, I can tell you our definitions, and what it means to you.
A pet/companion quality puppy is one that has cosmetic faults that in no way effects the puppy's health, or personality.
These puppies are just as healthy, and hardy as their littermates.
A cosmetic flaw is something that would make us as the breeders feel that this puppy would not be suitable to compete in the breed ring to win points toward it's AKC Championship.
These faults are usually markings that aren't correct such as, missing white markings, on face, feet, etc. or too much white in any area, or areas.
It could also include a puppy with a blue eye, or a puppy whose bite (Teeth alignment) is not correct, a kink in the tail, or any other fault which makes the puppy a poor choice to be shown in the conformation ring.

This is "Bear" a pet puppy due to a blue eye.

These puppies are required to be spayed or neutered by six months of age, and placed on a limited AKC registration. Meaning they can never compete in a conformation show, or be bred.
These puppies can however compete in obedience, agility, tracking, herding, carting, etc.

A Show Quality Puppy is one that embodies the qualities necessary to compete in an AKC Conformation show, correct markings, eye color, bite, structure and movement.
These puppies CANNOT be spayed or neutered until they are through being shown, or without written permission from the breeder.
When you agree to adopt a Show Quality puppy you are agreeing to keep the puppy un-neutered or un-spayed, allow us to show the puppy for you at AKC licenced conformation shows, (or if you want to, you can show your puppy.) and to take your puppy to a conformation (show training class) one hour per week.
adopting a show quality puppy does NOT however require you to ever breed your dog, only show it yourself, or allow it to be shown to it's AKC Championship.
If in the future you decide you would like to breed your dog certain criteria must be met before that will be allowed.

I hope this has helped you understand the difference between Pet and Show Quality puppies.
